Working with clients with Autistic Spectrum Conditions

Being Autism informed means I can create more accessibility

As the term suggests neurodivergent minds have some differences in the way they think and process information and this is also the case in hypnosis.

It might take longer to move into a trance state, or to process instructions. The word instructions itself might be problematic and “invitation” may be better accepted by the subconscious. Communicating verbally in trance might be more tiring and less effective.

Over reliance on visual descriptions or instant expectations of naming emotions might make the process harder than it needs to be.

The reorientation stage (where the client comes back from hypnosis to the every day brain state) might take longer.

Understanding how Autism affects hypnosis means as a neurodivergent person myself, I can also ensure accessibility for neurotypical people

Understanding the way my mind may work differently to neurotypical brains means I can be aware of where my expectations of trance might not work for the neurotypical brain and to remember to adapt accordingly.

Every client, and every mind is different. Having a full toolbox of techniques and being able to adapt in the moment helps me to give the very best experience to all my clients.

The way we study and understand Autism is changing

With more emphasis on research and courses led by people with Autistic Spectrum Conditions, the training available in this area is improving fast.

My additional training in Autism gives me an overview, but I feel communication with and research by Autistic people has been the most useful for helping me to build an inclusive practise.

As a neurodivergent person, I recognise the extra accessibility concerns when attending a new service, particularly within a therapeutic setting.

Two session hypnotherapy

Due to the additional neuron pathways, Autism can create more associations than the neurotypical mind which means habits, phobias, and fears might be more likely to cause problems.

I regularly treat this kind of issue in one session, but have recognised the need for orientation and familiarity in some of my clients. Therefore I now offer a two session package which takes into account the need for building safety and familiarity before the work starts.
